Snowbombing, a winter sports and music festival held in Mayrhofen, Austria, recently held its annual event where for the first time it feature an integrated RFID-based payment, access and social media system.
All Arctic Disco ticketholders were issued with a Barclaycard PayBand, an RFID wristband pre-loaded with 20 euros, redeemable at any one of the mountaintop bars. The electronic wristband also granted access to the cable car lift and could also be linked to the guest’s Facebook account for automated check-ins, status updates and tagged photos.
The contactless wristbands offered festival-goers the security and convenience of cashless payment. Fans were able to pay for goods quickly and easily, reducing long queue while eliminating the need to carry cash.
In North America, festival sites including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits, Electric Zoo, Moogfest and Le Festival d’été de Québec have all adopted similar RFID systems to reduce queues and eliminate fraud.
